Motanka

“Motanka”, handmade doll, is one of the most ancient and rare Ukrainian art. They embody a significant folklore heritage, and union of material and inessential.

Starting her series of paintings “Motanka. New millennium”, Anna felt a great desire to make one of them with her own hands.she began to research ancient handicraft traditions. This is how the collection of dolls under the same name was born. They became a continuation of the virtuosic combination of authentic traditions of the past and the dynamics of the current lifestyle.

The art of creating these dolls reflects the eternal spirit of Ukrainian culture and the natural rhythms of antropogenic culture. It embodies the power of earth, space and time and carries a protective mission towards its owner.

Precedently, Motanka was blessed and served as a faithful protector from birth.

when we look at doll’s face, we do not observe fixed traits, but see a conscious emptiness that absorbs the owner’s features and identity. Because of this lack of features, the dolls have a universal connection, evoking an ethereal unity that resonates with the human spirit.

Anna reflects on the narrative of modern visual culture and brings new life to this ancient art.
The new era of dolls embodies the unique attributes and personalities of the current world and, at the same time, carries the cultural heritage of its own country. In this way, while preserving the sanctity of their origins, Motanka resonates with today’s audience.
